Exceptional Learners Recognized at Completion Ceremonies

Students in the Exceptional Learners Division (ELD) have many different and complex needs. The WSWHE BOCES ELD staff provide them with an individualized education that truly serves them so they can grow, learn and be successful.

On June 13 a celebration of ELD students took place on the Southern Adirondack Education Center campus and on June 17, a celebration was held at the WSWHE BOCES Ballard Conference Center. Friends, family, teachers, staff, board members and administration were in attendance to honor the accomplishments of this group of students.

Laura Schaefer, principal for special programs at the Southern Adirondack Education Center said, “The group of young adults that we will be recognizing have incredible strengths, gifts and talents to share with the world.”

“As you sit here, ready to step into the next chapter of your lives, I want to remind you of something very important: You have the power to be the best at whatever you choose to do,” said WSWHE BOCES District Superintendent, Dr. Turina Parker.

The Myers Center ceremony had guest speaker Andrew Carpenter who is a vocalist for Flame the Band. Andrew was diagnosed with autism when he was in the fourth grade. He graduated high school in 2015 and joined the Transitions program to receive support for navigating post-secondary life through internships, mentoring, and classes in various independent living, academic and career skills. Andrew spoke about determination and striving for your dreams no matter what obstacles come in life.

Shawn Hunziker, principal for special programs at the F. Donald Myers Center said, “I would like to thank each of you for all that you have brought to the Myers Center during your time here. You have brought energy, laughter and a sense of community. Each of you have found a way to bring your passion to the school community. Graduates, your families, teachers, and the entire Myers Center Staff are extremely proud of you. This indeed is a special night and I couldn’t be prouder.”
