The WSWHE BOCES Women In Trades Initiative is focused on narrowing the skills gap and encouraging young women to enter the trades, in particular traditionally male dominated fields such as automotive technology, auto body repair, construction trades, environmental conservation & forestry, heavy equipment operation, HVAC-R, industrial and performance machining, power sports technology and welding.
The students in attendance were from Cambridge, Corinth, Mechanicville, Minerva, Schuylerville and Stillwater school districts.
The event included a video highlighting the importance of women in the trades, a welcome by the CTE Principal and a speech from two female employees from Saratoga Honda, guest of the day. Following those presentations, was a student panel where alumni and current students discussed their path in CTE, favorite part of each program, internship possibilities and much more. The audience asked an abundance of questions as well.
After the panel discussion and questions, current CTE students/ambassadors guided the guests in groups to several of the CTE classrooms for hands-on activities, introductions to current students as well as instructors discussing highlights of those programs.
A buffet lunch was provided by Culinary Arts & Hospitality Students and Poinsettias on the tables were grown by Horticulture, Landscaping & Floral Design Students.
