Criminal Justice Studies

A two-year program for students interested in careers in law enforcement, investigations, security, corrections, courts, law, social work and counseling, or other related fields. 

The comprehensive curriculum covers topics such as:

  • The Study of Crime
  • The Foundations of Law Enforcement
  • The Courts
  • Emergency and Fire Management
  • Introduction to Criminal Justice
  • Legal Aspects and the Law
  • Investigations
  • Corrections
  • Crime Prevention
  • Interpersonal Communications 

Students participate in mock trials, crime scene investigations, accident investigations, crime scene sketching, budget development, police reports, educational field trips, and community service projects. The curriculum is presented through classroom instruction, computer-based learning, and hands-on related activities and labs. It also includes applied math and English language arts.

Certifications & Endorsements:

  • Certified Protection Officer Certification
  • NYS 8-hour Pre-assignment Security Guard Certification
  • First Aid/CPR and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) per the Red Cross

 

Internships and Work Based Learning:

Each CTE program has a Work-Based Learning experience. This means that all students prior to the end of the second year are given the opportunity to be exposed to the operation of a business and specific job duties related to careers in their CTE area. This internship is designed to connect the skills and knowledge learned in the CTE classroom with the real world requirements of a business. Students must demonstrate good attendance, attitude, internship records, and work ethics, as well as respect for others and property.

 

30 hours of internship to include community service.

 

 

Articulation Agreements:

CTE has worked with area colleges to ready students for the world of work and for the rigors of post-secondary coursework. This program worked with area colleges to obtain articulation agreements that allow for advance standing or the issuance of credit to those CTE students meeting all program requirements and articulation agreement standards. The colleges WSWHE BOCES has an articulation agreement with for this program are:

 

  • Bryant & Stratton College
  • Fulton-Montgomery Community College
  • Herkimer County Community College
  • Hilbert College
